A Nigerian shirt buyer: 200 pieces per style, every quarter

A buyer from Nigeria found us through an Alibaba inquiry in 2024. Since then they have ordered shirts every quarter, about 200 pieces per style — and when they visited the factory, we spent a day with them in Guangzhou’s Zhongda fabric market.

From this case

What we learned

  • 01A multi-year account can start as one Alibaba inquiry. What decides it is how quickly and how specifically the first replies come.
  • 02About 200 pieces per style, repeated every quarter, is an order a factory can plan around — steadier than one large order that never comes back.
  • 03When a buyer visits, take them to the fabric market. Cloth chosen by hand settles what photos of swatches cannot.
  • 04A visit turns a supplier on a screen into people you know. The orders after it are easier on both sides.

Client background

This client is a clothing buyer from Nigeria. We mainly make shirts for them, and we have been working together since 2024. As with every case study on this site, we do not name the business or the people behind it.

How it started: one Alibaba inquiry

There was no introduction and no trade fair. The first contact was an inquiry sent through our Alibaba store in 2024 — the same form hundreds of buyers fill in, most of whom are writing to several factories at once.

Our sales representative picked it up and stayed on it: answering each question as it came, and keeping the conversation moving instead of sending a price list and waiting. That is not a technique. It is simply the part of the job that decides whether an inquiry becomes an order, and in this case it did.

The rhythm: about 200 pieces per style, every quarter

Since then the pattern has been steady. The client places an order every quarter, at around 200 pieces per style. It is not a volume account, and it does not need to be. A buyer who comes back four times a year, with quantities we can predict, is one we can plan fabric and line time around — and one whose shirts we get better at with every run, because the same team makes them each time.

The visit: the factory, then Zhongda fabric market

The client travelled to China and came to see the factory in person. After the factory, we took them to Zhongda in Guangzhou — one of the largest fabric markets in China, where building after building is filled with fabric and trim stalls.

For a shirt buyer, that day is worth more than any swatch card sent by courier. Shirting is judged by hand: the weight, the drape, how the surface feels, how a colour looks in daylight rather than on a phone screen. Walking the market together meant the client could choose cloth directly, with the people who would later cut and sew it standing next to them.

Before leaving, the client recorded a short message about the visit — it is the video at the top of this page. If you would like to check us the same way without the flight, we also offer a live video factory check.

What we took from it

Nothing about this account is dramatic, and that is the point. An ordinary inquiry, answered properly. Quantities that suit the buyer rather than the factory. A visit where we showed them more than our own building. Two years on, the orders still arrive every quarter — and we count that, more than any single large order, as the result.
