HS codes

HS codes for clothing

Clothing is classified in chapters 61 (knitted or crocheted) and 62 (woven) of the Harmonized System, and textile hats and caps in heading 6505. Within them, the six-digit code depends on the garment, whether the fabric is knitted or woven, the fibre with the greatest weight, and whether it is men’s or women’s.

Every row below was checked against a US Customs classification ruling for the same kind of garment. The US rate is the base duty today; the per-US$1,000 column shows what that rate means in money.

US rates: USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule, Revision 19 (2026), checked 2026-09-26. Base (MFN) duty only.

How to read the code

Four things decide a garment’s HS code

1. Knit or woven

Knitted and crocheted garments are in chapter 61; woven garments are in chapter 62. Jersey, French terry, fleece, rib and piqué are knits; twill, denim, poplin and oxford are woven.

2. The fibre with the greatest weight

A blend takes the code of the fibre that weighs the most. A 60/40 cotton-polyester hoodie is a cotton hoodie; a 40/60 one is a polyester hoodie. A few percent of spandex rarely matters.

3. Men’s or women’s

Most garments have separate men’s and women’s headings. A style that cannot be identified as either — most unisex tees and hoodies — is classified as women’s.

4. What the garment is

T-shirt, sweatshirt, trousers, shirt, jacket or dress each has its own heading. A collar and placket make a knit top a polo shirt, not a T-shirt.

Beyond the base rate

Additional duties are not in these numbers

The rates here are the US general (MFN) rates. Clothing made in China can also owe additional duties under chapter 99 of the HTS, such as Section 301 tariffs, and those change often. Check the current total with your customs broker or the CBP guidance before you price a shipment. CBP guidance on trade remedies

The first six digits are the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System. For the EU and UK rates, use their official lookups: EU TARIC · UK Trade Tariff

FAQ

HS codes for clothing

What is the HS code for clothing?

There is no single code. Knitted clothing is in chapter 61 and woven clothing in chapter 62; hats and caps are 6505. A cotton T-shirt, for example, is 6109.10, a cotton hoodie 6110.20 and men’s cotton jeans 6203.42.

Are HS codes the same in every country?

The first six digits are. Over 200 countries and economies use the World Customs Organization’s Harmonized System; each adds its own digits and sets its own rates — the US uses a ten-digit HTS number, the EU an eight-digit CN code.

What is the difference between an HS code and an HTS code?

The HS code is the international six-digit code. The HTS code is the US version: the same six digits plus four more that set the duty rate and statistics, for example 6109.10.00 for a cotton T-shirt.

Do these rates include Section 301 or other tariffs on China?

No. The rates shown are the US general (MFN) rates. Clothing made in China can owe additional duties under chapter 99 of the HTS on top, and those change often, so confirm the total with your broker.

Who decides the final HS code for my garment?

The importer of record declares it and is responsible for it, usually through a customs broker. For certainty on a specific style, US importers can ask CBP for a binding ruling — the rulings linked in these tables are exactly that.
