Is French terry the best fabric for lightweight hoodies?

French terry is a loopback knit: smooth on the face, with uncut yarn loops on the inside. Because the loops are not brushed, the fabric stays flatter, more breathable and less bulky than fleece at the same weight. When you brief a mill on French terry, specify more than weight: composition, yarn type (carded, combed or ring-spun), loop density, dye method and finish all change the result. Two 300 GSM terries can drape completely differently, and a weak yarn will pill even when the weight is right. Ask for pilling and spirality test results alongside the swatch.

Variants matter as much as the family name. Lightweight terry under 240 GSM behaves like a heavy T-shirt fabric and suits cropped or warm-climate styles; CVC terry adds polyester for stability; and yarn-dyed or garment-dyed terry carries different shrinkage and colour behaviour from piece-dyed stock. Custom-dyed terry may also carry mill minimums beyond the factory’s garment MOQ, while stock colours keep small runs workable. Treat “French terry” as a starting point for sampling, not a finished specification, and order enough yardage to wash-test twice — once for approval and once to confirm the bulk lot matches.

When is brushed fleece the right choice for a hoodie?

Brushed fleece starts as a similar knit, then the inside is mechanically brushed to raise the fibres into a soft nap. That nap traps air, so fleece feels warmer and looks more substantial than terry at the same GSM. Hoodie fleece commonly runs 300–450 GSM; above that you are in deliberate heavyweight territory, where fit, rib strength and shrinkage control matter more than adding further weight.

Fleece is the safe default when the hoodie is the outer layer. For a winter pullover or an oversized streetwear fit, 320–400 GSM cotton-rich fleece is the most commercially proven zone. Fleece quality is mostly yarn and brushing discipline: a well-brushed 340 GSM fabric can outperform a poorly made 400 GSM one, so judge the washed sample, not the spec sheet.

Polyester fleece — polar or microfleece — is a different product: lighter, quick-drying and pill-prone, suited to outdoor and performance hoodies rather than fashion programs. As a hoodie manufacturer, we see most bulk complaints trace back to unspecified shrinkage or pilling rather than to the fabric family itself, so write the finish and the test method into the order.

Care behaviour should be designed, not discovered by customers. Brushed cotton fleece can lose several percent of length in the first hot wash; compaction, relaxed drying and garment washing all reduce that risk but add cost. Poly-cotton fleece narrows the shrinkage gap but still needs the same wash verification. Publish realistic care instructions and keep a washed reference sample from the bulk lot, so shrinkage complaints can be answered with data instead of opinion.

How do cotton/poly blends and GSM change the decision?

Composition shifts care behaviour more than hand feel. One hundred percent cotton gives the softest face and the best print absorption but shrinks the most and dries slowly. An 80/20 cotton/poly blend keeps a cotton hand while improving dimensional stability, colour retention and drying time. Match fabric to the retail price tier, not only to the mood board. As a planning heuristic: hoodies retailing under about US$50 usually sit on 50/50 or CVC fleece in the 280–330 range; US$60–120 products justify cotton-rich 320–380 GSM with better yarn; premium programs above that go heavyweight with ring-spun or combed yarns. Yarn and finish move the result as much as the blend ratio. Ring-spun and combed yarns are smoother and stronger than carded open-end yarn; they cost more per kilogram but print cleaner and pill less over repeated washes. Bio-washing and enzyme finishes soften the hand and reduce pilling, while a silicone softener changes both feel and print adhesion. Specify yarn and finish alongside composition and GSM, or two factories will quote two different fabrics against the same line item.

Whatever you choose, verify shrinkage on a washed sample rather than trusting the label. The ISO 6330 domestic washing and drying procedure is the standard reference for that test; agree the method, the number of cycles and the tolerance with the factory before bulk. A common buyer target is no more than about 5% change in length and width after the agreed cycles.

Which hoodie fabrics suit printing, and which suit embroidery?

Printing buys a smooth, stable surface. Screen printing and DTG perform best on compact cotton or cotton-rich faces; high-polyester garments can dye-migrate through the ink at curing temperature unless low-bleed inks are specified. Sublimation only bonds to polyester, so it suits performance hoodies, not cotton fleece. The brushed inside of a fleece hoodie does not hurt printing — what matters is that the face is smooth and stable.

  • Screen print: cotton and cotton-rich faces are easiest; once polyester approaches half the blend, ask for low-bleed inks.
  • DTG: high-cotton faces give the sharpest colour and wash durability.
  • Sublimation: high-polyester surfaces only; the print becomes part of the fabric.
  • Embroidery: works on terry and fleece; heavyweight fabric supports large stitch counts with the right backing.
  • Puff and specialty inks: need a flat, stable face and tight cure control.

Embroidery has its own fabric logic. Stretchy or lofty knits need cut-away backing so stitches do not sink or distort; large chest designs sit better on structured fleece than on drapey tri-blends; and placement on a brushed surface should be sampled, because the nap can shadow fine detail. High-density designs on lightweight terry can pucker the panel — reduce the stitch density or move up in GSM rather than fighting the fabric with backing alone.

Always sample the decoration on the actual bulk fabric, not a similar substitute. Ink coverage, cure temperature and backing behave differently across GSM and blends, and a strike-off on the wrong base approves nothing. Keep the approved sample, the ink or thread references and the placement measurements together as one decoration record for the bulk inspector.

Decoration chemistry belongs in the same compliance file as the fabric: ask for AZO-free dye confirmation and, where the program needs it, a certification such as OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for the finished material.
