GSM means grams per square metre. It tells you how much one square metre of fabric weighs, so it is the clearest first number for comparing fabric weight. Higher GSM usually feels heavier and more substantial within the same fibre and construction, but it does not automatically mean softer, stronger or better.

For apparel development, use GSM to narrow the range, then confirm composition, knit or weave, finish, stretch, shrinkage and hand feel with a physical swatch.

What does GSM mean and how is fabric weight measured?

GSM is mass per unit area. A lab cuts a known area of conditioned fabric, weighs it and converts the result to grams per square metre. The principle is formalized in ASTM D3776/D3776M, a standard test method for fabric mass per unit area.

Do not estimate GSM from thickness alone. Brushed fleece can look thick because the surface is raised, while a compact knit at the same weight can look thinner and denser. Moisture, coating and finishing also affect measured weight.

  • Ask whether the quoted GSM is greige, dyed or finished fabric.
  • Set an acceptable production tolerance rather than a single impossible exact value.
  • Confirm the test sample is representative of the bulk roll.
  • Record the fabric code and approved lot with the swatch.

These ranges are development starting points, not universal quality grades. A warm-climate running top and a structured streetwear tee solve different problems. Review the T-shirt category and hoodies and sweatshirts to connect the number to the intended silhouette.

Also budget for colour. Dark or heavily finished fabrics may behave differently from the lab dip or undyed reference, so approve the actual colourway before bulk cutting.

Why can two fabrics with the same GSM feel different?

GSM describes weight, not the structure that carries it. Fibre type, yarn count, knit or weave, loop length, brushing, compacting and chemical finish all change hand feel and performance.

  • Cotton can feel dry, crisp or soft depending on yarn and finishing.
  • Polyester can add strength, quick drying and shape retention at a similar weight.
  • French terry exposes loops; brushed fleece raises them for warmth and volume.
  • A tight single jersey feels denser than a looser jersey at the same nominal GSM.
  • Garment washing can soften the hand but also change dimensions and colour.

How should a brand approve GSM before bulk production?

Begin with a hanger or swatch that has a traceable mill code. Make a development sample, wash it as the customer will, then re-check weight, dimensions, spirality, colour and surface appearance.

  • Approve the swatch in the final colour and finish.
  • Measure shrinkage after the intended wash cycle.
  • Check opacity, pilling risk, recovery and seam behaviour for the garment use.
  • Require a bulk-lot cutting or inspection report before production.
  • Keep an approved reference swatch for repeat orders.

Frequently asked questions about fabric GSM

Is 300 GSM fabric good?

It can be excellent for sweatshirts, heavier tops and some trousers, but may be too warm or stiff for a lightweight tee. Quality depends on the complete construction and finish.

Is 400 GSM heavy?

For common apparel it is heavyweight. It is often used for structured hoodies and sweatshirts, although fibre and brushing change how bulky it feels.

Which is better, 180 GSM or 200 GSM?

Neither is automatically better. At the same construction, 200 GSM is slightly heavier; choose based on opacity, drape, climate and target price.

How many GSM is 100% cotton?

There is no single value. One hundred percent cotton fabrics are produced across very light to heavyweight ranges.
